Dear Mrs Yeo,
How had you been recently? I miss you dearly and I believe the class will miss you too. Though you had left Kent Ridge for almost a year, thank you for making the effort to come down to school to teach a small group of us Social Studies. The skills you had taught us is very useful.
Social Studies and History mid year exams are round the corner. As each day passes, I begin to feel more and more uneasy and worry, maybe because I have not been revising these two subjects well enough to sit for the paper.
Between Social Studies and History, I prefer History lessons because during HIstory lessons we get to watch movies. Miss Heng had been showing us four movies as part of our revision. However, History is alot harder to understand and study. The textbook is really arduous. Surprisingly, the boys in our class treated history like a piece of cake. They are able to memorise the dates of the events happening and the terms of the words.
Though Social Studies lessons are more boring, however it is easier to revise because Social Studies is part of our life, such as healthcare in Singapore and terrorism.
There is a website that Miss Heng introduce to us for revision. The website is very interesting as there are games such as penalty shoot and swordman. By having these games, it tempts more students to try the games while answering the questions. Our class has been very focused and quiet in the computer laboratory when Miss Heng brought us in.
While preparing for our examinations, we also had to learn to schedule our timetable so that we can have enough sleep time and have efficient study time.
All in all, I hope that this message of mine will help you be more aware of our Social Studies and History lessons. Will be looking forward to seeing you soon and hope that you can receive our regards. Take care.
Love,
Jolene Tay 4E6

Education is something children nowadays have to go through. Have we ever wonder what if we do not go through education? Or maybe how important we are to our future society, or how are we able to help improve our society?
After going through twelve years of education, pre nursery, nursery, primary one to six, secondary 1 to 3, I realize the importance of education. In pre nursery and nursery, we learn simple words and mathematics sums. This is the very basic of what we are learning now. From then on, we had just started building our foundation in education. Foundation is like a start-up, we have to establish a good foundation in order to go higher and higher.
From primary one to six, we had reached the intermediate stage. In primary school, there is a system call streaming. We will be stream into EM1, EM2 or EM3. This determines where we will be going to for the next stage of our education. For the EM1 students, the will take higher mother tongue, and will have higher chances of getting in to better schools. Another extreme, the EM3 will then have very low chances of getting in to good schools, even for neighborhood schools, they can only get into the normal technical stream. All these system set up by the government are what I think as unnecessary stuff. But on the other hand, it is quite useful.
I felt it is unnecessary because this kind of system will cause the less intelligent or capable student who could not produce good achievements in studies will not be useful to the society, therefore they will have an inferior mindset thinking that they are useless. These people will not plan for their future therefore they will never succeed.
This applies to the system in secondary school. This is why I do not support the statement that majority of the people say. The advanced stage of our education will be the one that determines our future occupation. One thing I agree with the government is that the ITE students are able to get their diploma certificate after their two years spent in ITE. This helps them have better opportunities for their choices of jobs.
To me, The most useful aspects of education will be our character development or what many school call civic and moral education. Teachers had been teaching us about our character and how we should bahave. For instance, If an intelligent guy is able to work for a particular company but he has very bad character such as easily anger and offended, high egoism, no one will want to employ him. Character comes before a person’s brain. When we reach our adult life, working will naturally be our priority, so how can we use our personality in exchange of our intelligence.
globalisation
People who support globalization have their reasons and it is very obvious that the reasons benefits them. The very first reason that they support is because globalization helps improve the standard of living. As Singapore welcomes more foreign investments, the country gain more revenue, therefore the revenue will be use on areas like health, education and housing. The second reason is because globalization helps increase awareness of foreign culture. We get to learn about another religion, race or country’s culture and history. It is a good thing which globalization helps create as we can easily interact with people from different country. The last reason why people support globalization is because it helps increase awareness of our environment’s danger. This will help more people to be more cautious on how they treat their environment in order to give our younger generation the privilege to enjoy the earth’s natural beauty.
People do not support globalization because they felt that globalization has cause them problems. The biggest problem is actually the environmental degradation. As more housing and roads are being built, we will have to clear forest and our human activities like logging and industrial activities cause deforestation, flood, air pollution and global warming. These are very harmful to us. The second reason why people do not support globalization because the gap between the rich and the poor is getting bigger and bigger. The developed countries usually are the manufacturing activities owner. This is the reason why they are richer. On the other hand, the developing countries often face trade restrictions put up by the developed countries. they usually hire lowly skilled labours. As a result, the rich will continue to prosper and the poor will continue to face economic problems like retrenchments [poverty cycle]. Lastly, globalization makes a country lose its local identity. The loss of local culture had caused negative influences as the people especially the younger generations and that they do not bother about their locality. Globalization has cause all three impacts. Economic, social and environmental. i would stand on the side which do not support globalization because in future the economic and environmental impact might be harmful to me and on the other hand, the social impact had already influenced me.
my favourite food
We eat food to survive, without food humans will die. It is something we all have to do. Basically, I love all kinds of food. I like western food, japanese cuisines, handmade noodles and many different kinds of food. That is one of the reason why I put on weight.
Thought I like all kinds of food, there is one particular food I relish a lot, and it is none other than chicken drumstick. I eat all kinds of chicken drumstick like fried, steam, grilled or more. The reason I prefer chicken drumstick to other body parts of the chicken is because chicken drumstick is the most tender and juicy part. Days without chicken drumstick are bad.
I remembered when I was in Secondary two, I participated in the Singapore Youth Festival parade 2006. Before every practice, I would have my lunch with my friend before we proceed and I would buy chicken drumstick rice and after a plate, somehow I would be very tempted to order another plate but I could not fill the rice into my stomach eventually I just ordered chicken drumstick , either one or two.
As I said earlier, the drumstick is the best part of the whole chicken as the meat is more tender and juicy. There is this particular cooked chicken drumstick which is very delicious. The chicken is heated in the oven but before it is heated, it will be put in the freezer with its ingredients like butter and garlic or so. It is not commonly seen in coffee shops and restaurants. I ate it once in Malaysia a few years back and the chef actually told us how to prepare this dish but unfortunately we were not able to record down the recipe.
Personally I eat all kinds of food and I am not very picky towards food. As long as the food is edible, whatever food you serve me I will not mind eating. Lastly, though we find Singapore like a food paradise, it does not mean that we should keep on eating. All we need is three meals a day, especially ladies because we are very weight conscious.

First day of school in secondary one.[2005]

i remembered the first day of school in secondary one 2005 was a long and boring day for me. the duration for lessons grew longer compared to the lessons in primary school, subjects were alot lesser too. i was very excited when my dad fetched my mother and i to school. my mother accompanied me at the foyer until the school bell rang. the student councillors directed us to the hall. when i reached the hall, the floor as well as my shoes were equally slippery hence i slipped but fortunately i did not fall. The embarrassing moment was that a group of guys sitting at the back of the hall was sniggering at me. Ever since i was in primary school, i loathed principals giving long speeches as i tend to doze off during his or her speech. Unfortunately, every principal are suppose to give an introduction on the school , school motto and school facilities. The most memorable and rare activity which other batches of secondary one students have not come across so far. Its a collection made for the victims of the Tsunami victims. I remembered donating my first day pocket money as i did not have small change. When we got to class, I remembered Mdm Jean Tan, our form teacher arranged the tables sitting arrangement and we wree sitting in twos. Though i was sitting with this boy in class for almost a week, i did not dare to talk to him so we were like strangers. It is not because I am anti-social but i was a little timid and shy. Recess was long for me as i was all by myself hence i did not go to the canteen. I stayed outside my class for the entire half an hour. After recess we had a short icebreaker games and i got to know more friends through the game. The student councillors brought us round the whole school. I was not very interested in the school as i was unfamilar with the it. I was quite amused when i found out that our school is the only school with the canteen at level three. Mr Koh Suan Lam gave us a briefing on the CCAs of our school. I was not very keen in performing arts and clubs and society CCAs therefore i attended the trials for badminton girls and netball. However i ended up in Girls Brigade and i am really pleased to be in this CCA. I could not adapt to a new environment and i do not enjoy being new. The first day of school was not as unenjoyable as i thought of. eventually things improved over the days for secondary two, three and four because i had became familiar with the palce and i had firends around me.
